Spinnaker preparation

• All sheets and halyard end up at leeward side
• Windward sheet passes outside any shrouds in front of forestay to leeward
• Spinnaker halyard free of forestay, spreaders and shrouds
• Sheets pass through barbers, aft blocks and around winches
• Pole rigged to up- and downhaul positioned on windward side
• Spinnaker on deck in front of leeward shrouds (bigger yachts) or inside descent rigged to sheets and halyard

Spinnaker hoisting

1. Attach pole to mast and guy to pole end
2. Adjust Pole to horizontal position with up- and downhaul
3. Pull spinnaker clew with guy to pole
4. Hoist spinnaker (~10 cm slack of halyard to mast)
5. Adjust guy, sheet, barbers

Pole angle:

1. Wind 120 – 180° ➔ pole == 90° to apparent wind
2. Wind < 120° ➔ pole <= 90° to apparent wind (towards forestay)

Pole height

1. Leech breaks in mid-height ➔ pole ok
2. Leech breaks at top ➔ lift pole
3. Leech breaks at bottom ➔ lower pole decreasing wind

Spinnaker depth

1. Top
   1. Flatter ➔ lift pole NOT in strong wind
   2. Deeper ➔ lower pole strong wind
2. Bottom
   1. Flatter ➔ sheet lead back (barber open)
   2. Deeper ➔ sheet lead forward (tighten barber) strong wind

Broach

1. Windward
   1. Ease kicker
   2. Ease spinnaker sheet
2. Leeward HEADS DOWN!!
   1. Main jibes!!
   2. Ease kicker
   3. Ease downhaul!!

Rolling

1. Windward ➔ head upwind
2. Leeward ➔ bear away

Jibe

1. Bear away to downwind
2. Both barbers eased to ~ 1.0 m
3. Detach pole from mast ➔ Attach pole to (new) guy
4. Main sheeted in ➔ main jibed ➔ main eased
5. Detach pole from (new) sheet ➔ Attach pole to mast
6. Tighten guy barber/ease sheet barber

Spinnaker down

1. Ease guy ➔ pole to forestay
2. Haul in sheet
3. Release guy from pole (trip line) [No1 stay at lee of pole!] ➔ Haul in sheet
4. Release halyard ➔ pull in spinnaker
